When Highland Baptist Church celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2003, its leaders recognized the need for an updated history of one of Louisville's oldest churches. The last history had been written in 1968, and a seminarian retained to write a centennial history in 1993 was unable to complete the tasks. Church member Peter Smith agreed to pastor Joe Phelps' request to write this history. Several church members formed a History Task Force to coordinate the project.
