Anti-Racism

We believe that Black Lives Matter.

Highland’s Anti-Racism Team seeks to educate its members and the members of Highland Baptist Church about racism and becoming antiracist, to find ways to stand against systemic racism, and to serve alongside communities of color to promote bridge building.

The Anti-Racism Team grew out of the former Mission and Justice team, the work of Highland’s Shelby Park ministry, and a training by the organization Crossroads Antiracism Organizing and Training, held in November 2016. The training was followed by a weekly antiracism class for nearly three months, using the PBS series Race: The Power of an Illusion and the book Waking Up White. The Anti-Racism Team hosted its first meeting in June 2017.

We read books and articles, watch films and documentaries, research historical Black figures while also working to center and amplify voices of color in our city and country.

The governing leadership body of our church, Ministry Council, recently appointed the Anti-Racism Team to draft an antiracist covenant statement, which the church will expectedly adopt by vote in 2023.
