A Note from Highland's Immigrant Support Team

by Highland Baptist Church on January 13, 2026

Thanks to all of you who contributed holiday gifts of needed supplies to La Casita and the Solidarity Project in November and December! Both organizations were hugely thankful for your generosity.

As immigrant detention and deportation continues to rise, and now with the death of an immigrant supporter, Renee Macklin Good, at the hands of an ICE officer, our immigrant population needs even more solid support. We on HBC’s Immigrant Support team join with others across the nation who condemn the inhuman tactics being used by many ICE officers, including Jonathan Ross, the officer who shot and killed Ms. Good, and we mourn her tragic death.

Our concern continues to focus on the immigrants in Louisville. What can we do? Organizations like Kentucky Refugee Ministries and La Casita can always use financial support, and both of these list on their websites specific items their clients can use.

For those of you who want to be more involved, consider joining the Community Defense Network of LSURJ (Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice) as some HBC members already have done. Members of the network are trained to respond to calls for accompaniment, serve as eyes and ears at vulnerable gatherings, meet-ups, and centers that accompany directly impacted communities, show up at court hearings, and more. The next training is Wednesday, February 18, 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

You may also want to attend the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ICIJ) gathering on January 20, 6:30‒8:00 pm, at the Olmsted in the Masonic Homes. Register at https://tinyurl.co/ICIJ-one-year/.
