Many things come to us “out of the blue,” and while most are good for us, storm clouds also can form, and challenges can come our way. When they do, we often hope that they will go away. This is only natural; we don’t want our problems sticking around. But there’s another way to be people of hope in the life of faith, and for me, it’s a richer and more sustaining way to view things. Faith teaches us to “hope in” things. Faith teaches us to cultivate hope that is rooted in something beyond wishing things might change. When things are unknown or beyond our control, even in the presence of these things, we can place our hope in the God who came in Christ to show us the truest form of love, grace, and yes, the truest form of hope.
This Advent season, we face challenging times. As we move toward the gift of the manger, let us all consider how to invest our hope in the promises and the faithfulness of the God who came to walk among us, and who walks among us still, come what may.
Prayer: O God in whom we place our trust and in whom we invest our hope, thank you for being our ever-present help in times of trouble.
