For the Living of These Days—A Word from Lauren Jones Mayfield

A summer Mayfield family favorite is the song “Old Town Road.” You can’t help but have fun while listening and singing along. It’s a genre bending piece that includes beats from the rapper, Lil Nas X with melody from country’s famed, Billy Ray Cyrus.

Once you know the meaning behind the song, it’s even more fun. Lil Nas X hit a roadblock in life. College did not work, his music career was hitting dead ends, his discouragement was escalating, his parents upset, and his sister tired of him as a roommate.

In part, the lyrics sing, “I’m gonna take my horse to the old town road, I’m gonna ride ‘til I can’t no more…I got the horses in the back, Horse tack is attached…Can’t nobody tell me nothin’. You can’t tell me nothin’.”

Interpretation: It’s Lil Nas X wanting to leave everything behind to pursue his calling as a musician. Unwilling to give up and listen to the nay-sayers, he writes, “The horse is like a car. The Old Town Road is the path to success. In the first verse, I pack up, ready to go.” (https://www.oprahmag.com/entertainment/a27073704/lil-nas-x-billy-ray-cyrus-old-town-road-lyrics-meaning/) And go he did with this chart-topping hit.

As I learned more about the piece, I could not help but remember the passage in Hebrews, “…Let us lay aside every weight that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith…”.

What is it that you are looking to do—this week, this summer, this year? Know that pursuing our goals does not mean that life all of the sudden gets easy, but we do have the promise that we are not alone on the journey. “Ain’t nobody gonna tell me nothin’” that will hold us back from being the person and community God created us to be!

Here is an awesome rendition with handbells by the group “Walk off the Earth.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRXv_VU35Lw&feature=youtu.be) Enjoy!
