Advent Devotional: Saturday, December 16

Artwork by Allison Keenan

Never great at small talk, I’m saved every year by the “Can you believe it’s Christmas already? Where has the year gone?” line I can use in countless awkward encounters. In a magical sort of way, the anticipation of Christmas leaves us feeling that time slowly trudges on and, at the same time, that it quickly rushes us towards this special day.

The anticipation can fill us with hope and happiness, as easily as it can feel us with dread and anxiety.

The day is coming and we have much to prepare: our homes, our lists, our meals, our travels.

The day is coming and we have much to rejoice: the Light, the Baby, the Peace, the Joy.

What will endure in us this Christmas?

Dear Lord, thank you for this day. As we prepare for your Gift, as we rejoice in another Christmas, let us keep your enduring love in our hearts. As we think on the Christmas story, let us see ourselves reflected in it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
