Thinking Together Column 6/27/2017

Luke 10 reports how seventy  disciples describe their experiences in towns and villages where they have taken Jesus’ revolutionary message of God’s generous love for all. They exclaimed, “Lord, even the demons submit to us!”

That’s what we heard from Renee and Perry upon their return from VBS Camp (children) and Passport Camp (youth).

Not that our little darlings are demons (!). But both Perry and Renee and sponsors in these two contexts were witnesses to God’s love at work. They saw young people move into more holy and gracious places. They saw relationships form in the most surprising and redemptive ways. They saw healing, affirmation, and growing through tough decision-making.

Renee and Perry both returned from camp with gratitude and wonder at how God had taken all their preparations and prayers and parlayed them into church at its best.

I’m grateful for these colleagues. I’m also deeply grateful for men and women who take vacation time and energy to play pivotal roles in the lives of Highland’s children and youth.

We aren’t forming these kids to be the church someday. They are the church now, as they are. They bear the image of God and are being formed by both saints and Spirit to be dynamic Jesus-followers for our day.  ~ Joe
