Friday Church Reflections

Those who gather at Highland Baptist on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. are usually quite a mix. While most congregations are of similar background and culture, that is not true at Friday Church. As you look among the congregation, you see people of all races and walks of life. People who are strangers are sitting next to each other; greeting one another with warm hugs and handshakes; and supporting one another. They tend to see themselves as flawed and broken but also as individuals created and loved by God!

When asked as to why did they choose to come to Friday Church, you will get a wide variety of answers-most all involve “peace”. Just as food, clothing and shelter are the basic needs of the body, peace is a basic need of the mind. Today, there is practically no system to provide for this basic mental need. Worse still, our fast-paced, stress-filled lifestyle agitates our mind a great deal. On the other hand, when we come to worship together, we take those mental burdens off and sooth our minds with the healing serenity that fills the sacred space of Highland Baptist.

One aspect that everyone is in agreement upon, is that Friday Church meets all individuals wherever they are at in their spiritual journey and invites them to have a deeper understanding of God’s abundance, mercy, peace and love in an environment that is non-judgmental or condemning in nature.
