On Monday, January 19, twenty-four of Highland’s children and their families participated in our MLK Dream Day sponsored by the Families with Children Ministry Group. Our morning together was divided into two parts – the first segment focused on our differences and similarities, reminding children that all people are created by God and therefore loved by God and should be loved by us. We also explored the theme of what is fair and unfair in our world.
The second half of our morning focused on the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as we imagined how we might help our world be a place where everyone is loved for exactly who they are. Our morning together also featured two special guests: Paul Whiteley, who shared a biography for our children to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Duane Nathaniel, who shared Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech with the children.
Such beautiful moments of understanding, feeling, thinking, and dreaming took place! Look for our display in the Children’s Commons where we explored in artwork “How can we change the world?” Many thanks to Lisa Estes, the lead planner of our event and all those who helped prepare materials beforehand, cared for younger siblings in childcare, and led stations during the event.
