On Monday, September 16, the third phase of our renovation project began. After a week’s delay due to equipment problems and repair, a drilling rig was delivered to Highland’s construction site Monday morning. Just before noon, the crew began drilling one of four holes (20 feet deep!) that will hold the piles that will become the foundation of our new lobby space between the education building and the Sanctuary. This groundbreaking marks the beginning of the phase of the project that will add square footage to Highland’s building footprint for the first time in 60 years. The last addition to our building was the Education Building, built in 1953.
Over the next several weeks, we will witness the construction and assembly of the “shell”—foundation, floor, walls and roof—that will become our new lobby space and expand our second floor to include a commons-like space for Highland’s children and their families.
We are grateful for everyone’s flexibility as we continue through this season. Thank you for your patience as we navigate these waters of renovation together.
