An open letter to a people of faith gathered at Highland Baptist Church from Bill Holmes, member of Highland since June.
I am thankful for your welcoming spirit. No litmus test. No orthodoxy demands. Just come as one who believes that in Jesus Christ we see God revealed, a God who welcomes all. Long-time members have been open, welcoming, and not protective of their place or position.
You have assembled an amazingly gifted staff, although that one guy sometimes disturbs the “the powers that be.”
In HBC I have seen what it means to see Jesus in the faces of hurting and marginalized people (Matthew 25:31-46). The comedian, Flip Wilson, often said in one of his routines that he was in the “Church of What is Happening Now.” I interpret that to mean a church that looks at the world around it through the eyes of God as revealed in the life, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ, then responds in worship that includes acts of love seeking justice (Micah 6:6-8). That is what I see In HBC.
Thanks for being who you are.
