Over the doors of our sanctuary is a reminder from James 1:22 to "be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only."
Our Benediction (final words before the end of the worship time) reminds us that “we end this form of worship to resume the worship that is our very lives.” In other words, our calling as children of God isn’t complete simply because we “came to church.” Some members of Highland find their own unique ministry through their work, homes, or community service. In addition, Highland engages in ministry through:
- Providing weekday space to Kentucky Refugee Ministries. Two HBC members serve on the KRM Board of Directors. Highland has sponsored three families in recent years and is always open to sponsoring more when members sense God’s call to do so.
- Embodying Christ’s love to all people through our ongoing connection to Africa’s sub- Saharan refugees who migrate into Morocco with little or no resources for living. Groups from HBC have made trips of friendship and service to Morocco and created micro-enterprises that create jobs and sustainability. Two groups are currently planning Morocco trips.
- Serving weekday supper at Salvation Army. Over 100 HBC members serve monthly in this ministry, arriving at 4:00 p.m. to serve over 150 people each night.
- Studying places of need and injustice and participating in local service projects through WOMEN ON MISSION. Three groups, each named for a missionary, meet monthly. The Emma Leachman Group meets at the church on the first Tuesday of the month in the afternoon. Childcare is provided. On the second Monday evenings, the Jean Janes Group meets in homes of the members. Three of these meetings are built around potluck meals. The Joan Sutton Group meets on the fourth Mondays, usually in homes. For more information, call the church office at 451-3735.
- Assisting a weekly Bible study class for adults with special needs.
- Participating in Highland Community Ministries, meeting physical, financial, emotional, and spiritual needs in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville.
- Partnering with Wayside Christian Mission to provide volunteer mentors who walk alongside men and women in their addiction recovery program.
- Participating in Extreme Build as a part of the Kentucky Baptist Fellowship and Mountain Hope organizations.
- Holding weekly Narcotics Anonymous meetings, as well as other civic meetings in our facilities.
- Connecting our faith in Christ to our care for the Earth through our Creation Care Team.
- “Selling” alternative Christmas gifts (making a donation in someone’s honor in lieu of a traditional gift) to support relief work locally and abroad.
- Supporting the education of young men from Sudan who were “adopted” by HBC in 2001.
- Asking questions about where God’s justice needs to break forth in areas of injustice in our city and beyond through our Justice group that meets every month.
- Participating in the ecumenical Good Friday Walk for Justice in downtown Louisville.
- Empowering members who feel called to serve God internationally with our financial and prayer support.
